Share in the spirit of Thanksgiving by helping our community with the Onkel Hans Food Drive. Bring your non-perishable food items with you to the Thanksgiving Day Parade and volunteers will happily collect them along the route!
Thank you for lending a helping hand!
In 2017, the Onkel Hans Food Drive raised 8,777 lbs of non-perishable food items along the parade route; as well, $12,550 in cash was collected, which was used to purchase additional food.
In addition the 2017 Onkel Hans Food Drive used an online donation feature, which allowed parade spectators to make donations to the food drive right from their mobile phones! The online campaign also opened up the options for donations for all residents of Waterloo Region, and remained open until the end of the festival on Saturday, October 14/17.
Since the KWO Onkel Hans Food Drive began over 20 years ago, it has collected in excess of 1.3M pounds of food to give those in need in our community a helping hand.
Each year local citizens and visitors share with those less fortunate by donating food and cash as part of the Thanksgiving tradition in Kitchener-Waterloo. As over 150,000 people lined the streets to watch the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade, one of the highlights of Canada’s Greatest Bavarian Festival, volunteers from corporate sponsors Sobeys; Waterloo Nissan, Piller’s Fine Foods; CHYM 96.7/ Country 106.7 FM /570 News; Virgin Radio105.3, 99.5 KFUN and CTV shared their time to collect the donations along the parade route.
The Onkel Hans Food Drive was honoured in 2014 with the 2014 Achievement Award for Best Fundraising Idea from Festivals and Events Ontario.
